A teacher will be hanged next month after raping a girl in India so violently that she had to have her intestines realigned. Mahendra Singh Gond is set to become the first person executed since a change in the law last year which introduced the death penalty for child rapists.
The attacker kidnapped his victim last June and left her body in the jungle after the assault, believing her to be dead. A high court confirmed the death sentence last month and the date of his execution has been fixed for March 2, the Times of India reported.
After the attack the schoolgirl spent months in a New Delhi hospital having her intestines realigned.
Gond is currently in prison in Jabalpur, in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. At the time of the attack NDTV reported that Gond was drunk and had kidnapped the girl from her cot after speaking to her father.
He was said to have led her away from the house, attacked her and then dumped her nearby. Last year the law was changed to allow the death penalty for rapists who attack a child aged under 12.
India has been shaken by a series of sexual assaults since 2012, when a student was gang-raped and murdered on a moving New Delhi bus.
