Russia begins military withdrawal from Syria

The first Russian warplanes have left Syria after president Vladimir Putin ordered a partial pullout of forces from the country.

Mr Putin made the surprise announcement on Monday. He emphasised that the Russian airbase in Hemeimeem in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia and a naval facility in the Syrian port of Tartous will continue to operate.
