Askar Smagulov, 25, was attacked after a late night row about noise outside a block of flats. He fell screaming into a pool of blood on the floor, with the handle sticking out of his face.
“I felt like I was hit by a bottle. There was a sound of crunch. I fell to my knees, and he ran away,” said Mr Smagulov.
His friend Alexei rushed to his aid but when an ambulance arrived it took them an hour to decide which was the best hospital to take him to.
Amazingly, despite the delay, doctors managed to not only save his life but also save his eyesight. Mr Smagulov is now slowly recovering from the attack, which happened last summer in the Russian city of Omsk.
But he is hoping to see justice meted out to his alleged attacker, Yevgeni Loshkov. Loshkov, 27, has claimed he only acted in self-defence.
