London to Sydney in 2 hours

Researchers in Australia have successfully tested an experimental hypersonic rocket that can reach speeds of Mach 7.5 – a staggering 5,717mph.

Boffins plan to use the “game changing” technology to develop new passenger aircraft.

A new “hypersonic” airliner could fly from London to New York in the time it takes to watch Corrie – or the Moon in less than two days. The test rocket – dubbed HiFiRE 5B – was launched from the Woomera Test Range in South Australia.

It reached heights of 173 miles before successfully returning to Earth.
