ALMOST 40 people have died in a fireball after a lorry carrying flammable liquid collided with a bus. Five other vehicles were involved in the accident which was reportedly caused by the truck smashing into the back of the bus, causing an explosion.
Firefighters battled the resulting blaze for five hours before it was brought under control.
At least 38 people died and a further five are being treated in hospital for injuries. The crash occurred on a motorway in the southern Chinese province of Hunan in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police say they are now investigating the incident.
The frequency of crashes in the country has caused road safety and the upkeep of the transport network to come under scrutiny.
