HAITIA manhunt is under way in Haiti after a massive prison break in the north of the country that left a guard and at least one prisoner dead. Some escaped prisoners also got hold of firearms. Chaos broke out in Arcahaie prison in northern Haiti on Saturday as inmates stormed free of the facility in their dozens, stealing weapons in the process.
UN troops have been called in to help after the prison break in Arcahaie – a coastal town about 30 miles north of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince.
One local described “dozens of vehicles carrying heavily armed UN and Hatian forces” around the area. The US embassy has warned its citizens to avoid the area after the “violent” prison break.
The inmates launched their violent attack after they were released from a crammed holding pen to take a bath. The inmates broke into an area used by the guards – stealing at least five rifles among other weapons. At least one policeman and one prisoner were killed in the escape.
But images on social media suggest many more are dead. Another three lags have been injured in the chaos. The Government has called on citizens to be vigilant.
