The mother and stepfather of a 15-month-old baby have been charged in Perpignan, southern France, after the child was injured in a washing machine drum.
Bruises and red marks were found over the baby’s body after her mother took her to the pediatric unit of accident and emergency. The 19-year-old told staff her daughter had fallen over.
Local news website France Bleu Roussillon reported that social services suspected foul play and told the local prosecutor of the baby’s injuries.
However, on Monday, when interrogated by police, she changed her version of events. According to the report, the baby’s mother said that her 22-year-old partner had put the baby in the washing machine and turned the drum several times by hand with the door open. She did not say he turned it on. The incident took place at a laundrette.
As for the mother, she has been released on bail and charged with failing to prevent a crime. The baby has been placed in social care.
