Five dead, more than 20 injured after explosion in illegal firecracker factory in India

At least five persons including three minors died while more than 20 others were injured when an illegal firecracker factory containing huge amount of gunpowder caught fire resulting in a high intensity explosion which brought down an entire residential building at Khasganj under Sohsarai police station in Biharsharif town of Nalanda district on late Thursday night.

The intensity of the explosion could be gauged from the fact that three other neighbouring residential buildings were also demolished due to the incident, increasing the number of casualties and injured persons.

Police said the five deceased were identified as Mohammad Sartaj (3), Taniya Fatma (4), Shaista (15) a one month old Samaira and Munna Pandit (40). Shaista was sister while Sartaj, Taniya and Fatma were children of Sarfaraz Khan (35) who was running the illegal cracker manufacturing factory inside the house. Munna was one of the residents living in a neighbouring house which was also demolished.

Fire tenders failed to reach at the spot even after at least an hour of the incident due to the storage of huge amount of illegally manufactured fire crackers which continued exploding even after the building came down. Fire fighters took more than four hours to bring the flames under control.
