BANGALORE: A 23-year-old woman is battling for her life after she was attacked by her father with a chopper. Her crime: She was talking to her lover, who belongs to another caste, enraging her father who didn’t approve of their relationship.
The victim of the honour killing attempt was later ferried to hospital by her lover while the father is absconding. The incident played out on Wednesday morning at Dommasandra on Sarjapur Road in Anekal, Bangalore Rural district.
A Suma and Chinnaswamy, 26, were in love for the past five years. But Suma’s father, Ashok Reddy, a resident of Gopasandra and owner of a weaving unit, had objected to the match as the youth hailed from a lower caste.
On Wednesday, Suma had gone to her father’s weaving unit in Dommasandra where she also works. Chinnaswamy came to meet her defying Reddy. When he saw them talking, an enraged Reddy ru8sh8ed at Chinnaswamy, chopper in hand. A shocked Suma tried to save her lover but received the brunt of her father’s fury. She received grievous blows from the weapon.
Reddy then tried to assault Chinnaswamy. But he managed to stave off the attack and escaped with minor injuries. Later Reddy ran way from the spot. “It was Chinnaswamy who took Suma to St John’s Hospital in Bangalore where she is in a critical condition,” police said. They said a special team has been formed to look out for Reddy.
