Belgium terror: Two suspects shot dead by police plotted ‘grand scale attacks’

Armed police stormed the apartment above a bakery in the town of Verviers at around 6pm on Thursday afternoon. The two men, who were tried to open fire on officers before being gunned down themselves.

Police confirmed a third man was seriously injured and arrested in the “jihadist-related” raid. A Belgium federal prosecutor said the group were preparing to launch “terrorist attacks on a grand scale” and officers did what they had to do to prevent this.

Eric Van Der Sypt told a press conference that the men were “extremely well-armed”. He added: “The suspects immediately and for several minutes opened fire with military weaponry and handguns on the special units of the federal police before they were neutralised.”
