Atletico Madrid reached the final of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night after seeing off Bayern Munich in an action packed semi-final second leg at the Allianz Arena. The Spaniards lost 2-1 on the night but progressed via away goals after a 2-2 aggregate score.
A free-kick from Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso broke the deadlock for the hosts after overwhelming control of possession in the opening stages.
Bayern spurned a number of chances to further their lead as Atleti appeared well off the pace—including a missed penalty from Thomas Muller—and it would prove costly as Antoine Griezmann scored a stunning away goal in the second half. Robert Lewandowski made it 2-1 on the night late in the match, but it was too little, too late for the home side.
