This is the moment another AirAsia passenger jet was involved in a dramatic landing as it skidded off the runway and ending up on a grass verge. The AirAsia Zest – part owned by AirAsia Philippines – overshot the runway as it arrived at Kalibo International Airport in the Philippines today.
A total of 159 passengers and crew were forced to disembark via the emergency inflatable slides as emergency services rushed to the scene. Medics checked over passengers but no injuries were reported.
AirAsia Philippines said the terrifying incident – which happened as rescue teams found the site where another AirAsia plane crashed in the Java Sea – was caused by “high winds”.
In a statement the airline said: “AirAsia Philippines confirms flight Z2 272 from Manila skidded off the Kalibo International Airport runway at 5:43PM upon landing.”
“All 153 passengers and crew were able to disembark safely, no injuries reported. All passengers are now at a hotel assisted by AirAsia staff.”
Rappler reporter Jet Damazo-Santos, who was on the flight, tweeted dramatic pictures of people leaving the plane and then being checked over by medics.
She added: “Engine was shut immediately, we were told to leave bags, deplane asap. Firetruck was waiting. Seems handled well.”
