17 Hindus die after drinking homemade alcohol in Pakistan

Some 17 people died and 37 were taken to hospital after drinking illegally-brewed alcohol during a Hindu religious festival in southern Pakistan. Police confirmed that nine people remain in a critical condition after drinking the homemade alcohol. The Hindu community in Tando Muhammad Khan district in the south of the country were preparing to celebrate the Holi festival, which begins tomorrow.

Police spokesman Niaz Shah confirmed 11 people have been discharged from hospital while four arrests have been made for brewing the illegal alcohol. Only a few licenced shops are allowed to sell alcohol to non-Muslims in Pakistan, otherwise it is illegal to sell or drink alcohol in Pakistan.
